Big Sky Ski Chalet — Big Sky, MT
Sanding & Finishing Custom Finish

This Big Sky ski chalet called for something special—a light, airy aesthetic that would complement the stunning mountain views and bring a sense of Scandinavian elegance to the space.

The Nordic Look

To achieve the desired Nordic-inspired finish, we used a specialized whitener additive in our finishing process. This technique lightens the natural wood tones while still allowing the beautiful grain patterns to show through, creating that signature Scandinavian look that’s both modern and warm.

Why a Whitened Finish Works Here

Light-toned floors do something specific in a mountain home with high ceilings and large windows: they bounce the natural light back into the room rather than absorbing it. In a chalet where the views are the point, that matters. You’re not fighting the space to feel bright — the floor is doing some of that work for you.

At the same time, the whitener additive preserves what makes real hardwood worth choosing in the first place. The grain is still visible, the material still reads as wood. It doesn’t look painted or bleached out. It lands somewhere between the warmth of a traditional finish and the clean lines of a modern interior — which is exactly what this room called for.

That balance also means the floors hold their own whether the owners furnish toward minimalist or lean into the mountain-cabin feel with heavier timber and leather. A neutral, light-toned floor rarely becomes the wrong choice five years later.

The whitener was worked into the water-based finish during the sanding process — not a surface stain or a paint, but integral to the finish layers themselves. That’s how you get the consistency across the grain without the blotchy, washed-out look that shortcuts produce.
